Dr. Emil Krsteski: "International Archives Day points out the importance of the archival profession in modern society"

Today, archives and archivists worldwide celebrate June 9, International Archives Day, whose marking aims to popularize archival activity and the role of archiving in society. This day has a symbolic meaning, which was obtained by the International Council on Archives (ICA) establishment, an international non-governmental organization whose main task is to upgrade and promote the work in the archives and the protection of world archival heritage. The International Archives Council connects around 200 countries with over 1,400 members, thereby, achieving continuous cooperation with UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and many other organizations in the world. As a holiday of archives and archivists, this day was accepted at the Annual General Meeting of the International Archives Council, held in Quebec, Canada, in 2008. More recently, International Archives Day has grown into an International Archives Week.

This year, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic virus- covid-19, the International Archives Council organizes webinars and workshops on several topics of interest to the management of archives and professionals, which are expected to be attended by the director Dr. Emil Krsteski and other employees from the State Archives. The theme of this year's International Archives Week is "Strengthening Archives", which lasts from 7 to 11 June and includes maintenances with webinars where experts will share their views in terms of enabling accountability and transparency of archives, then the role of cooperation and networking in strengthening the work of archivists and archival organizations, as well as the easier application of artificial intelligence in archival practice. Special attention attracts the special webinar "Building Digital Bridges: Digitalization for Cooperation and Connectivity", co-organized by UNESCO.

The State Archives of the Republic of North Macedonia, in the context of marking the celebration of the International Day of Archives and 70 years of its existence, contributes to raising awareness of archives and promoting the protection of archival material. Documents should not be difficult to access, nor are they for internal use only by historians. In this regard, the State Archives supports the position of the International Council of Archives that public opinion on archives needs to be improved. Our institution is involved in marking the celebration of the International Day of Archives with a permanent staging-chronological exhibition "Documentary wealth of the Archives in Stip" in the Department of the State Archives in Stip, which covers the period from the Ottoman rule to the liberation of the city. The authors of the exhibition are Dr. Jasmina Damjanovska and Dr. Branislav Svetozarevic. All interested citizens can visit this interesting exhibition, which represents the city of Stip through less known facts and documents that are important to our history.
