Central Part
The State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia was established on April 1, 1951. From 1926 to 1941, the State Archive operated in Skopje under the leadership of the State Archive of Serbia from Belgrade. The need to collect and protect archival material became apparent during World War II. On May 3, 1945, the Ministry of Education announced the intention to establish an Archive of the National Liberation Movement of Macedonia. This initiative was not realized. On May 31, 1946, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of Macedonia established a Commission for collecting archival material. The commission hired educators to collect archival material, but their work did not bear fruit. The Faculty of Philosophy, the Museum of Macedonia and the Institute of National History in Skopje started collecting material in the period 1946-1951.
In 1949, the Historical Archive was established at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Macedonia with the task of collecting and processing archival and memoir material on the labor and communist movement and the People's Liberation War in Macedonia. This material is kept today in the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia.
On January 6, 1951, the National Assembly of the People's Republic of Macedonia adopted the Law on State Archives, which established the State Archive of the People's Republic of Macedonia.
In the period from 1951 to 1960, nine district historical archives were established which, in accordance with the Law on Archive Material from 1990, are part of the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia as its regional offices in: Bitola, Kumanovo, Ohrid, Prilep, Skopje , Strumica, Tetovo, Veles and Stip.
The existing purpose-built building of the State Archives has been in use since 1969 until today. It has an archive depot and working premises for the management and staff of the Archive.
Bilateral cooperation, research and publication are organized in the central part of the Archive. The State Archive has a laboratory for conservation and restoration of archival material, a microfilming laboratory and a bookbinding.
The central part of the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia has jurisdiction over the holders of archival material that are of state rank and importance. Today, the Archive performs inspection and expert supervision over the archive work of 220 priority holders and about 500 non-priority holders.
The reading room of the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia has 10 seats and is equipped with 4 micro readers and 1 micro printer. At the request of the users, the Archive makes microfilms, photocopies, xerox copies, etc. The working hours of the reading room are from 8 am to 2 pm every working day.
The archive has a rich professional library that includes historiographical and archival literature, magazines and encyclopedic publications.
SIGNIFICANT ARCHIVE FUNDS AND COLLECTIONS WITH WHICH THE CENTRAL PART OF THE STATE ARCHIVE OF RUBLIC MACEDONIA IS AVAILABLE
The State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia has over 1,300 archive funds and 27 collections of documents, in a total amount of 3,951 meters in length. The Archive also has close to 5,000,000 microscopic archives available to the Archive and approximately 1,000,000 microscopes and 500,000 xerox copies of material researched in foreign archives. The Archive also receives digitized archival material (10,811 recordings). The oldest document kept in the Archive dates from the 12th century.
Of particular importance is the archive fund of the Bitola Cadillac (court), which was created continuously from 1607 to 1912. The archive material from this fund refers to the social and economic circumstances in the Bitola vilayet (190 books - sigils with a total of 40,000 separate acts, written in Old Turkish).
From the time of the Turkish administration in Macedonia are preserved the funds for the district administrations (kajmakamlaci) for Prilep (1869-1912), Tetovo (1869-1912), the municipal administrations in Veles, Kocani, Kratovo, Kriva Palanka, Kumanovo, Prilep, Radovish, Skopje , Tetovo and Stip (1869-1912).
From the time of the national-revolutionary movement of the Macedonian people are preserved the funds of prominent Macedonian revolutionaries and activists: Goce Delchev, Grigor Prlichev, Kuzman Shapkarev, Vojdan Chernodrinski, Petar Mandzukov, Dimitar Vlahov, Krste Misirkov and others. VMRO (1896-1926).
Funds of diplomatic missions (embassies, consulates) and trade agencies of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Russia, Great Britain, France, Austria-Hungary and Italy in Turkey and Macedonia (1830-1941) are preserved.
The Archives keep the church funds of the Greek Orthodox Church in Macedonia (1705-1917); of the Bulgarian Exarchate in Macedonia - metropolises, hierarchical vicarages, church communities and nuns (1890-1912); of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Macedonia - metropolises, hierarchical vicarages, church communities and dioceses, church administrations, churches, monasteries and parishes (1913-1941) and the funds of the Islamic religious community - Wakav administrations, district muftis, district muftis and district muftis Imams (1919-1941).
From the period of the Bulgarian administration in Macedonia (1915-1918) the funds for the district, district, city and municipal administrations have been preserved.
For the period of the Serbian administration in Macedonia (1918-1941), funds from the bath administration of the Vardar Banovina (1929-1941) have been preserved.
From the time of the Bulgarian occupation of Macedonia (1941-1944) funds have been preserved for the district, district and city municipal administrations, directorates and police administrations, as well as for the various military courts.
From the period of the People's Liberation War in the Vardar, Aegean and Pirin part of Macedonia, the funds of the military units are kept: corps, divisions, brigades, battalions and detachments of the National Liberation Army and the Macedonian Armed Forces (1941-1945).
The following funds of the highest state bodies have been preserved from the period of construction of the People's Republic of Macedonia: Anti-Fascist Assembly of the People's Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) (1944-1945), National Assembly of the People's Republic of Macedonia / Assembly of the Federal Republic of Macedonia (1945-1990), Government of the People's Republic of Macedonia / Executive Council of the Assembly of the Federal Republic of Macedonia (1945-1990), Presidency of the Federal Republic of Macedonia (1974-1990).
The archives store the funds of the state administration bodies of the People's Republic of Macedonia / FR Macedonia, as follows: ministries, main administrations and directorates, commissions, councils, etc. (1945-1990).
The archive has the funds of the socio-political organizations in the People's Republic of Macedonia, namely: the Communist Party of Macedonia / the Union of Communists of Macedonia, the Popular Front / SSRNM, the trade union, the youth and the fighters of the National Liberation Army (1943-1990).
Also, part of the funds of the holders in the field of economy, banking, education, science, culture and sports are kept in the People's Republic of Macedonia (1945-1990).
The Archive keeps session and other archival material of the highest state bodies of the independent Republic of Macedonia, as follows: President of the Republic of Macedonia, Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and Government of the Republic of Macedonia (1991-2000).
A significant part is occupied by personal and family funds of: Andreevi from Krushevo, Bogdanovi, Mashovi and Kirkovi from Veles, Bogdanovi from Thessaloniki, Bogoevi од from Tetovo, Bojadџievi from Debar, Isakovski and Pop Antovi from Skopje, Zozi and Danabash from Bitola, Popovi from Prilep Srmabo .a, Robes from Ohrid and others.
The archival collections consist of firmani (1646-1859), berati (1702-1911), waqafnami (1574-1911), geographical maps and others.

Immediately after the establishment of the archive center in 1951, the National Board of the City of Skopje in 1952 adopted a decision to establish a State Archive under the jurisdiction of the National Board of the City of Skopje and the Skopje District, thus beginning the organized protection of archival material. The name of the District Historical Archive - Skopje, which has been used by the institution since the end of 1953, is changed to the Historical Archive - Skopje. Since 1974 it has been functioning as the Archive of Skopje - Skopje, and since 1990 it has been transformed into a Regional Department, as an organizational unit of the only administrative organization Archive of Macedonia. Since 2000, the Regional Office - Skopje continues to operate as the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia - Skopje Office, without change in the territorial jurisdiction.
The territorial jurisdiction of the Skopje Department covers Skopje and its surroundings: Gazi Baba, Gjorce Petrov, Karpos, Centar, Kisela Voda, Aerodrom, Butel, Cair, Suto Orizari, Aracinovo, Studenicani, Zelenikovo, Petrovec, Ilinden, Soper Sandevo. Works with 220 holders of archive material.
The Skopje Department has a microfilm laboratory with equipment for recording 35-mm film and microfiches.
In addition to its basic function, it has developed a publishing activity oriented to the history of Skopje and the Skopje region, with significant monographic editions of famous revolutionaries arranged in the editions: "Bright characters from the revolutionary past of Skopje", "Memoirs", "Monographs".
"Special editions dedicated to reports from scientific conferences".
The department has 675 funds and 10 collections:
Among the more significant funds are:
- "City leadership of the Municipality of the City of Skopje" (1918-1941);
- "People's Liberation and People's Boards of the City of Skopje" (1944-1953);
- funds for educational, cultural and scientific institutions, for the period 1919-1980 and
- funds for commercial production enterprises, for the period from 1919-1990.
- the funds of the Orthodox Church (1919-1946), which refer to the parishes, churches and monasteries and the funds of the Islamic religious community - such administrations, trusts and imams.
The Collection of over 30,000 photographs of Skopje and its surroundings, created in the period 1928-1983, is very important. The photographs after the catastrophic earthquake in Skopje in 1963 and the construction have been completed with special attention.
In recognition of the achieved results in the field of culture and for successful cooperation in the field of archival work, the Skopje Department has won several awards.
The reading room has 10 seats, and for the needs of the users xerography can be performed.

The department in Bitola was established in 1954 as a municipal archive. It works in a new purpose-built building. Since 1990 it has become a regional department of the State Archives of Macedonia. The Bitola Department has competencies over the holders in the municipalities: Bitola, Demir Hisar, Mogila, Novaci and Resen with a total of 195 holders.
The department has 916 funds and 25 collections. The oldest document is from the 15th century (parchment in ancient Hebrew). Although most of the documents are from the period after the Second World War, there is also archival material with very important data on the political, cultural and economic history of the municipalities for which it is responsible, as well as beyond for the period until 1944.
The reading room has 6 seats for users, and xerox copies are made for their needs.
The working hours of the reading room are from 8 am to 2 pm every working day.
The library has 3,823 books, 163 magazine titles and 155 newspaper titles.

The archive of Veles was established in 1954, and since 1951. to 1954 The archive center functioned as an archive department within the National Museum of Veles. The department works in a new purpose-built building and has a reading room. It is responsible for the following municipalities: Veles, Caska, Gradsko, Rosoman, Negotino, Kavadarci, Demir Kapija and Gevgelija. The department works with 267 holders of archive material. This department has 538 funds and 8 collections. The oldest documents date from 1768.
Significant archival funds are:
- Archive funds of municipalities and municipal administrations (1918 - 1941) and
- The family funds of the trade families Kitsovi and Hadzi Petrushevi (1800-1918) and several personal funds.
The Veles Department prepared several exhibitions where the archive material was presented to the public. These are the titles of the exhibitions:
- "Documents on the activities of the Veles partisan detachment Dimitar Vlahov",
- "The revolutionary and creative life of Kocho Racin",
- "The life and work of Ordan H. K. "The Giant" and
- "Veles in the last century".
Since 1998 he has prepared a permanent exhibition entitled "Veles through documents and photographs".
In 1979 the Association of Archival Workers was established.
The reading room in the Veles department works for the users of archive material every working day from 9.00 - 15.00 where a xerocopy is available.
Department Kumanovo

The archive in Kumanovo was established in 1954. Under his jurisdiction are the municipalities of Kumanovo, Lipkovo, Staro Nagoricane, Kriva Palanka, Rankovce and Kratovo. This Department works in difficult conditions and in a non-purpose building built at the end of the 19th century. A special problem is the accommodation of the archive material.
The department works with 200 holders. It has 543 funds and 8 collections. The oldest documents date from 1870, and most of the material was created in the period after World War II. It has documents with economic, social, cultural and political content.
The department does not have a reading room, and for that purpose the working premises from 9 - 15 o'clock are used.
Department Ohrid

The Archive in Ohrid was established in 1951, and after 1990 it was transformed into a Regional Department within the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia. Its activity covers the municipalities: Ohrid, Debarca, Struga, Vevcani, Kicevo, Drugovo, Oslomej, Vranestica, Zajas, Debar and Centar Zupa. The new purpose-built building was built in 1979.
The department works with 385 holders of archive material.
The department has 598 funds and 17 collections. Most of the archival material is from the period after the Second World War, and the rest mostly refers to archival funds and individual documents from the XIX and the first half of the XX century. Archival funds and collections contain very important data on the political, cultural and economic history of the area of the mentioned municipalities.
The Collection of Church-Slavic Manuscripts from the 14th to the 20th Century and the Collection of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books are very important and valuable.
In this Department the most important are the funds for:
- Municipal administrations (1918-1941 and 1941-1944);
- People's Liberation Boards (1944-1945) and Municipal Boards (1945-1990);
- Banovina Hydrobiological Station (1934-1941), Fishing Station (1941-1944), Hydrobiological Station (1944-) all based in Ohrid;
- Gymnasiums and primary schools from 1913-1945;
- Socio-political organizations, societies and associations;
- Religious funds of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Islamic Religious Community.
From the family funds, the funds of the trade families Grupchevi, Jovanoski, Kocarevi and others stand out;
From the personal funds as the most important can be distinguished: Bojadziski Boris, writer - Ohrid, Prlichev Grigor, poet - Ohrid, Masin Foti, priest - Ohrid and others.
The department has a reading room with 6 seats, equipped with a device for copying archival material. The archive material can be used from 9 am to 3 pm every working day.
Department Prilep

The archive in Prilep was established in 1955. The regional department works in an old adapted building with an upgraded depot, which due to lack of funds has not been completed. The initial forms of organized collection and protection of archival material occur immediately after release. During the collection activity until the establishment of the regional department Prilep is performed by the National Museum in Prilep within which the archive department existed.
The department has jurisdiction over the municipalities of Prilep, Dolneni, Krivogashtani, Krushevo, Makedonski Brod and Plasnica. Works with 188 holders of archive material.
The Prilep Department has 540 funds and 7 collections. Most of the archive material refers to the period after 1944.
Significant funds in this Unit are:
- "City Municipal Administration - Krushevo" (1941-1944);
- judicial funds (1914 - 1944) and 1945 to date;
- "School Echoes" 1913-1941;
- funds of high schools, secondary and primary schools for the period 1914-1980;
- Tobacco Institute (1924 -);
- the funds of the religious institutions of the Orthodox Church from the church communities and churches (1872-1945) and
- funds of humanitarian companies (1919-1930).
The department has a reading room with working hours from 9 am to 3 pm every working day, and users can be served with copies of the archive material.
Department Strumica

The Strumica Regional Department was established in 1956. By decision of the National Board of the Municipality of Strumica number 6702 from 18.04.1956 with the name City Historical Archive. The department works in an adapted building with a reading room. The working hours of the reading room are from 9 am to 3 pm. Users can be served with xerocopied archive material.
The territorial jurisdiction of this department is in Strumica, Berovo, Novo Selo, Pehchevo, Vasilevo, Bosilovo, Valandovo, Bogdanci and Dojran. It works with 225 holders.
The department has 453 funds and 8 collections. The oldest document dates from 1882. and belongs to the fund Evangelical Methodist Church.
The funds for:
- The People's Liberation and People's Committees in the territorial jurisdiction of the Department (1944-1962);
- Banking, industrial, agricultural-forestry, trade and catering, transport and craft enterprises and shops (1939-1959)
- Chambers and Business Associations (1945-1962)
- Rural labor cooperatives (1947-1953) from Strumica and Berovo districts
- Craftsmen and Merchants (1920-1951)
- Municipal Assemblies (1963-1990)
The "Haxhi-Skerlevi" fund (1928-1958) stands out from the family funds.
Department Tetovo

The Tetovo department does not have a separate room for reading and research, but the archive material can be used from 10 am to 3 pm. Users of archive material can use xerox copy services.
The Tetovo Department was established as a "Historical Archive for the Municipalities of Tetovo and Gostivar" in 1961, and today the territorial jurisdiction covers 9 municipalities: Gostivar, Tetovo, Brvenica, Bogovinje, Zelino, Jegunovce, Tearce, Vrapciste, Mavrovo and Rostuse.
The department works in an adapted building and takes care of 183 holders of archive material.
There are a total of 701 archive funds and collections in the Tetovo Department. The material primarily refers to the period after 1944, and the number of documents before this period is smaller.
Significant funds and collections are:
- city municipalities and administrations (1918-1941);
- People's Liberation, People's Committees and Assemblies (1944-1990);
- Chamber of Commerce, Crafts, Catering and Agriculture (1945-1965) and
- first instance, district and municipal courts (1919-1972)
- political organizations and associations (1945-1990).
The funds of the primary and secondary schools are represented by all the municipalities for which the Department is responsible (1913-1986).
Religious funds are from the Orthodox Church (1887-1937) - hierarchical vicarages, church communities, churches and monasteries and from the Islamic Religious Community (1930-1944) - waqf trusts and imams.
The oldest document is in the Collection of documents in Turkish from the Tetovo kaza (1705/1924) and dates from 1705.
Department Stip

The Department of the Archive in Stip was established in 1956. Since May 1976 the Department has been working in a new purpose-built building with a reading room. It has jurisdiction over the municipalities: Stip, Karbinci, Sveti Nikole, Lozovo, Probistip, Kocani, Cheshinovo-Obleshevo, Zrnovci, Vinica, Delchevo, Makedonska Kamenica, Radovish and Konce.
Works with 275 holders of archive material. The reading room works with users every working day from 8 am to 3 pm, and users can make xerox copies of the archive material owned by this department.
The department has 523 funds and 22 collections. The oldest documents found in the funds and collections in this department date from 1895, then archival material from the early 20th century, but the main part is the material created after 1944.
Significant funds available to this Unit are:
- funds for the national liberation and people's boards - district, district, city, municipal and local (1944-1960) and
- court funds (1920-1990);
- National Theater - Stip ”(1923-1973) and
- funds for political organizations, associations and societies (1944-1990).
The most important educational funds are: the fund "Real High School - Stip" (1923-1940) and the funds for secondary and primary schools.
The religious funds are from the Orthodox Church (1918-1948) - hierarchical offices, parishes, churches and monasteries and from the Islamic religious community (1921-1946) - the muftis in Stip, Kocani and Radovish.
More important family funds are: "Balvanlievi" (1894-1957), "Karagjozovi" (1918-1924) and "Hadzi Kimovi" (1900-1940).
The collections are composed of biographies and memoirs of the participants in the National Liberation War from Stip (1939-1945), supported by photographs.
