The State Archives of Macedonia Celebrates 75 Years \u2013 \"A Pillar of Macedonian Identity\u2019\n\nYesterday, the State Archives of Macedonia marked its 75th anniversary under the motto: \u201cThe State Archives \u2013 a Pillar of Macedonian Identity.\u201d The institution was established in 1951 by decree of the then-government, and today it faces a major challenge: the digitization of its archival materials.
Director Dimitar Bogeski stated that analyses are underway regarding the financial framework for the process, which will cover not only the central archive but also its nine regional departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a pilot project, the Archive is already collaborating with the Government of Slovenia to develop an information system where digitized materials will be accessible to the academic community and the public. We are entering the era of electronic documents, which must be stored and protected against cyberattacks,\u201d Bogeski emphasized, adding that the shortage of IT personnel is being addressed through training and skill enhancement for existing staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Archive takes pride in its rarities \u2013 the oldest is the Gospel of Luke from the 12th century, found in the collection of the Robevci family from Ohrid, as well as the rich documentation from the Ottoman period. We even have documents that the Ottoman Empire itself did not retain, such as the Bitola Kadiluk, continuously preserved from 1629 to 1912,\u201d the director noted, stressing that the originals remain in Macedonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After four decades in its old building, the Archive moved to a new facility in 2014, which initially had issues with leaks and document damage. Bogeski assured that conditions have greatly improved, and the conservation and restoration sector has been strengthened with new staff. Additionally, a team will be sent to Turkey in May for advanced training in modern preservation methods.

\u201cThe institution also runs a program to acquire documents related to Macedonia from foreign archives, in cooperation with the Institute of National History and the Faculty of Philosophy. Currently, we are cataloging around 3,500 microfilms brought from other countries, which have not yet been processed. We expect to uncover a significant number of important documents for our state,\u201d Bogeski highlighted.

With this anniversary, the State Archives reaffirmed its role as a guardian of statehood and collective memory, looking toward the future with digitization and modern technologies.
