The Archives and the Challenges of the New Era

Representatives of the State Archives, joined by hundreds of archivists from the entire world, participated at the 31st Conference International Archival Day, which was held on 29 and 30 November 2021, with the help of the virtual platform ZoomAt the conference, the State Archives was represented by its director, Dr. Emil Krsteski, and by the head of the Sector for Research, International and Domestic Cooperation and Publishing of Archives, Ms. Svetlana Usprcova. The conference was organized by the International Institute for Archival Science of Trieste and Maribor - IIAS, the State Archives in Trieste, the Slovenian Research Agency and the Department for Archival Studies of the Alma Mater Europea University.

Representatives of around 20 states (Slovenia, Italia, Croatia, Malta, Russia, India, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Oman, the Czech Republic, Romania, Belorussia, Austria, Kazakhstan, Germania, Republic of Serbia, Ukraine, Spain and the Republic of North Macedonia) participated at the conference. The 31st Conference was opened with the welcoming speeches by: Dr. Peter Pavel Klasinc, Director of the International Institute for Archival Science Trieste and Maribor and Head of the Department of the Archival Science at Alma Mater Europaea; Ms. Giulia Barrera, President of the Assembly of the Members of the IIAS and representative of the General Directorate of Archives of Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities of Italy; Ms. Grazia Tatò, Deputy Director of the International Institute of Archival Science and Director of the Autumn Archival School; Mr. Dieter Schlenker, Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence; Charles Farrugia, Director of National Archives of Malta and President of the European Branch of the International Council on Archives, Mr. Ludvik Toplak, President of Alma Mater Europaea – European Centre of Maribor; Dr. Bojan Cvelfar, Director of National Archives of Republic of Slovenia, Mr. Matej Muženič, President of the Archival Society of Slovenia; Mr. Mikhail Larin, Professor at the University of Humanities, Moscow, Russia, and Mr. Stanislav Raščan, State Secretary, responsible for development cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia.

The presented papers focused on the challenges in management of the digitally born records, the need for increased online availability of the archives and the need for preparing the archives for the new generation of researchers by creating new educational programs and methodologies, as well as using the informative technology as a tool for interaction between archives and users, and the social media as a ‘virtual door’ to the archives in constructing their modern image. On 29 November, the 37th General Assembly of the International Institute on Archives was held as a part of the Conference, with discussions for admitting new members in the Council of the Institute, while in the period from 29 November to 4 December 2021, the 15 Autumn Archival School, organized by the International Institute for Archival Science of Trieste and Maribor and the State Archives in Trieste, as a part of the Conference for young archivists. All the report papers presented at the conference are going to be published in Atlanti, a review of the International Institute for the archival science of Trieste and Maribor, which is published continuously since 1991.
