On this day, 78 years ago, the people of Skopje welcomed their freedom, which was brought to them by the 42nd and 50th People's Liberation Divisions of the Macedonian Army and the 16th Macedonian Brigade after several days of hard fighting with the fascist occupier. Residents of Skopje witnessed the street fights, which took place on "Ilindenska" street, near the main Post, the Officer's House, the National Bank and the Old Railway Station. Macedonian fighters saved the "Matka" hydropower plant from the explosion and destruction, as well as several other vitally important objects, and the unarmed civilians protected the Stone Bridge from destruction with their lives. These events are engraved in the memories of the participants in the fighting through testimonies and books that present the joy of Skopje when they welcomed the liberators in the center of the city. Since that historically most significant day for our capital, it has been constantly evolving, and we are obliged to express our respect to the fighters who gave their youth for its liberation. Over 420 heroes died for Skopje, who will never be forgotten.
Let us congratulate the great holiday of November 13—Skopje's Liberation Day!
