The State Archives is a significant scientific-historical and cultural institution, which for the past 72 years has been a vital repository of historical records and documents that provide insight into the country's past.
On January 23, 1950, the first General Law for the State Archives in Yugoslavia was adopted, and then, on January 6, 1951, the Assembly of the PR of Macedonia brought the Law for the State Archives. In 1951, based on the Law for the State Archives of the PRM, on April 1, was established the State Archives of the PRM (since 1965 owns the name the Archives of Macedonia, since 2000 – the State Archives of the Republic of Macedonia, and since 2019 the State Archives of the Republic of North Macedonia). That is why we mark this day as the day of archives and archivists in this country. Except for the central part, in the period 1951-1962, departments were opened in the cities of the whole country: Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola, Prilep, Kumanovo, Veles, Stip, Strumica, and Tetovo.
Last year, were realized publications of books “Niko Zupančič and Macedonia in 1903”, “Albanian documents for the history of Macedonia – Debar Prefecture” and “Macedonian archivist” no. 31-32. The exhibitions “Old Balkan photos”, “Missionary of Mercy – Mother Teresa”, “140 years since the birth of Milton Manaki” and “Macedonia remembers. To be never forgotten!”. Realized cooperation between the State Archives of Spain and Austria, as well as participation in a series of international conferences and seminars in the field of archival studies.
The State Archives is a member of several international organizations – the International Council on Archives (ICA) and the International Centre for Archival Research (ICARUS).
The Archive is responsible for collecting and preserving records of historical and cultural significance. It also undertakes educational activities, exhibitions, conferences, and workshops for promoting the study of history for raising awareness of the importance of preserving historical documents.
The State Archives started digitizing all the documents it owns. It is planned to digitize 25,000 documents, which will enable their greater protection and availability to all citizens as well as to the scientific public.
On this day, we give recognition, respect, and gratitude to archivists from all over the country for their contribution, for their tireless work to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of our country, as well as for their commitment to the protection of our heritage for future generations.
