The State Archives published the "Turkish documents on the history of Macedonia - censuses from the XIX century, book VI, volume 2" by Dr. Dragi Gjorgiev, which are a continuation of the translation of the extensive population census of Skopje villages made in 1844/45. The first volume of this translation was published in 2002 and it translated the first 100 pages of the mentioned census, and the next 100 pages are included in the second volume. These documents are historical sources, the so-called they write notebooks, through which one gets an idea of the number, the material condition, as well as the religious and professional structure of the population. Taxes and various duties were determined on the basis of these data.
According to the conducted census, the rural population from the Skopje villages was mostly engaged in agriculture and cattle breeding, from where they earned income. In this register are also registered the properties of the rich Muslim owners of farms who lived in Skopje, and who had properties in the surrounding villages. The second volume provides comparative data on the property of the rural population in relation to the urban population, which was a prerequisite for the gradual settlement in the cities and their Christianization in the second half of the XIX century.
