In memoriam of Dr. Atanas Vangelov (1946 - 2021), former director of the State Archives

The name of Dr. Atanas Vangelov occupies an important place in the cultural and social life of our country. He built his scientific career as an employee of the Faculty of Philology in Skopje as a full professor, who will later perform the functions of vice-dean and dean. He had the opportunity to promote the Macedonian language in France, where he stayed on a study visit to the University of Paris. Furthermore, he was awarded to the French Government in 1995 for his work in promoting French culture. He is the author of several papers in the profession, for which he has received several prestigious awards at the state level. For some time he was president of the Council of the Struga Poetry Evenings and a member of the Writers' Association of Macedonia. Dr. Atanas Vangelov also performed political functions, in 1994, he was elected a Member of Parliament when he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council in Strasbourg, and in 2004 was appointed as ambassador to Hungary.

In 2021, he received the prestigious award "October 11", the highest recognition in the field of science, art, economy, and other activities. He was appointed director of the State Archives in November 2002 and remained in that position until September 2005. During his tenure, the Archive recorded significant results in its work, especially in the area of research and publishing, advocating for the involvement of archival staff. His term as director was marked by the publication of a monograph on the occasion of 60 years of existence of the Macedonian government, in Macedonian, English, and Russian language. The employees of the State Archives will remember him as a professional and manager, who imposed high ethical and professional standards in the institution.
