TRAINING FOR ARCHIVE PROFESSIONALS AS A PART OF BRITISH LIBRARY PROJECT
From October 17 to 20, 2022, specialized training and workshops were held as part of the British Library's “Time Stands Still” project. Participants in the movement were archival professionals from the Department of the State Archives in Bitola who were trained in the digitization of photographic material, creating metadata and primary protection and cleaning of photographic material. Part of the workshops was devoted to familiarization with the ISAD(G) international standard for archival descriptions.
Other topics covered by the trainers included: the preparation of Guidelines for the preparation of archival materials from the fund for scanning in series and folders, creation of metadata and organization of work folders with master copies, determination of unified names of scanned files, familiarization with the structure of the photograph and identification of photographic processes, recognition of the types of damage to gelatin-silver photography as well as the levels of their protection. There was also practical training for working with scanning equipment, installation, and how to handle the equipment as well as the archive material. This practical training also included cleaning and preparation of photographic material
The training was conducted by Goran Stojkovski - Head of the Department for Information Technology and Digitization of Archive Material in the State Archives, Emilia Rop - State Advisor for the Protection of Archive Material in the State Archives, and Lidija Pajevic, a photo conservator trained at the Getty Institute for Conservation in the USA.
This project will enable the "Brothers Manaki" fund to be the first archival fund at the level of the entire country that will be processed according to modern international standards at the level of archival units. Archival professionals after completing the training are enriched with new knowledge, which will practically help them to carry out the digitization process of the legacy of the brothers Milton and Janaki Manaki.
